What are computers?
Computers can provide a wide range of functions which make computers useful for everyday situations. They can be loaded with software of various types to perform these functions for everyday use as well. A computer is an electronic machine, operating under the control of instructions stored in its own memory that can accept data (input), manipulate the data according to specified rules (process), produce results (output), and store the results for future use (storage).
Every day, people depend on different types of computers for a variety of applications. A home user relies on the computer for entertainment, communications, Web access, e-mail, reference, research, education, personal finance and productivity software. A small office and self employed individuals working from home. These users use specialized software and communications software as well.
Mobile users have notebook computers often equipped with a modem so they can work on the road. They often use presentation software. Large business users utilize computers to run their business by using automated systems for the company and large networks besides it. Power users require the capabilities of workstations or other powerful computers to design plans, produce publications, create graphic art, and work with multimedia including text, graphics, video, and other media elements.
